FORT LAUDERDALE, FL, USA – Young at Art gather about 40 new residents of the NW Gardens Apartment to get to know each other and meet artist Carlos Alves for the Art of Community project on August 24, 2013.
Report from Marie Berlin – “It went incredibly well, however much different from story circles with a roomful of artists and arts organizations who know how to talk. It was definitely share a story and get a story. Our icebreaker was to have each resident find a neighbor that they didn’t know and do a portrait of that person, painting their face through the Plexiglas and then we pulled a print from it. It was a beautiful icebreaker, lots of smiles and laughter. Each person was tasked with finding out the name of their partner and one unique fact or characteristic about that person. They enjoyed it so much that we had to call “time”. They introduced each other and found out their similarities. It was an intergenerational activity and they acknowledged that they now knew someone by name in the community that they didn’t know before. We posted the prints in the room as we moved onto the story circles. ”
