Jeff Perlman, as a former Mayor of Delray Beach and on-going civic activist, reminds us of the steps that everyone can take to build a community.
In the wake of the most heated election that Delray has seen in quite some time, there has been talk of the need to mend fences and heal divisions that have arisen over the past several years.
While debate is always healthy for a community, division and infighting can be destructive and the truth of the matter is that without a unified community it is hard to move the needle on progress. I would argue that the success the city has enjoyed since the late 80s would not have been possible without two things; community input and community unity on the big issues.
So in that spirit, what does it mean to build community? And how do we do it?
Here are some ideas:
- Turn off your TV and tune into your surroundings
- Know your neighbors
- Use your library
- Use your parks
- Volunteer at a local non-profit
